Branch: My Stark Family

      My paternal 3rd great grandparents are William Henry Tyler and Sarah Ellen Stark. Two of their children are listed in the 1880 US Federal Census in Culpeper, Virginia, living in the household with Lewis & Malinda Dangerfield along with their own children.  Their names are Charles Tyler & Lewis Tyler.  Their relationship to the head of the household is listed as “grandson.”  This led me to believe that Lewis & Malinda Dangerfield are the parents of Sarah Stark.

      I found Lewis & Malinda in the "Roanoke County (Va.) Register of Colored Persons Cohabiting Together as Husband and Wife."  There it listed Malinda’s maiden name as Hackley.  So, why does Sarah have the maiden name Stark?

      As I did some research on my DNA cousins on Ancestry.com, I found that we are descendants of Hackley’s and Stark’s, but I didn’t find many Dangerfield’s.  Both Sarah and her mother, Malinda, are listed as Mulatto in the 1870 & 1880 census records.

    I had concluded that Sarah’s father is a Stark and her mother is indeed Malinda Hackley.  Also, I believed Sarah’s father was a white slave owner, as I see that many of my DNA cousins all have a common European ancestor by the name of James Stark.
